Do Token Unlocks Affect Price?
Token unlocks are on every crypto calendar, and the usual advice is "unlock means dump". The data says it is more nuanced than that, and the most useful signal comes after the unlock, not before it.
What the data says
Market maker Keyrock studied more than 16,000 unlocks. Key findings:
- About 90% of unlocks created negative price pressure, regardless of size or type.
- For larger unlocks, price weakness often starts around 30 days before the unlock and accelerates in the final week.
- Prices tend to stabilise within about 14 days after.
- Bigger unlocks led to sharper drops, roughly 2.4x, and more volatility.
Recipient type matters more than size
- Team unlocks were the most damaging in the study, with the worst crashes around -25%, attributed to uncoordinated selling.
- Investor unlocks were controlled and slow, because funds sell via OTC, TWAP/VWAP execution and hedges.
- Ecosystem unlocks were the only category with a positive average effect (+1.18%).
Why watch recipients, not the date
An unlock only adds sell pressure if recipients actually sell. The calendar can't tell you that. The chain can: unlocked tokens moving to an exchange, a market maker or an OTC desk is the real event. Tokens that stay in the recipient wallet are just a number on a vesting schedule.
How the alert looks
Checklist: how to trade an unlock
- Size vs. circulating supply and daily volume. 2% of supply against thin volume is a lot; 0.5% against deep volume is not.
- Who receives it? Team and early investors behave very differently from ecosystem funds.
- Remember the 30-day window. Much of the impact can be priced in before the date.
- Follow the tokens. A deposit to an exchange or market maker after the unlock is the actionable signal.
- Expect calm after ~2 weeks. Volatility around big unlocks tends to fade within about 14 days.
